Steps to install and use VNC for AIX :

1. Download the VNC RPM bundle for AIX from bullfreeware.com (http://www.bullfreeware.com/affichage.php?id=1104)

2. FTP the RPM to your AIX machine and install it :

# rpm -ivh vnc-3.3.3r2-6.aix5.1.ppc.rpm
vnc                         ##################################################

3. Any RPM package installed can be checked using the “rpm -qa” command. Here we check if VNC RPM is installed using :

# rpm -qa | grep vnc
vnc-3.3.3r2-6

4. Binaries required for VNC are installed in this path : /opt/freeware/bin/ with symbolic links placed here : /usr/lpp/X11/bin/

5. Add this path : /usr/lpp/X11/bin/ to your PATH environment variable. Else you may get an error like this while trying to start the VNC Server :

# /usr/lpp/X11/bin/vncserver
vncserver: couldn’t find “xauth” on your PATH.

6. To add path of VNC binaries do this :

# export PATH=$PATH:/usr/lpp/X11/bin/

7.  Now start the VNC server. You will need to provide a password to be used while connecting to this VNC session :

# vncserver

You will require a password to access your desktops.
Password:
Verify:
New ‘X’ desktop is aixtestserver:2

Creating default startup script /home/root/.vnc/xstartup
Starting applications specified in /home/root/.vnc/xstartup
Log file is /home/root/.vnc/aixtestserver:2.log

8. For connecting to the VNC session from a remote machine we need to know the RFB(remote framebuffer) port for that session. One way of getting that is :

# ps -ef | grep vnc
    root  9961718        1   0 09:02:52  pts/0  0:00 Xvnc :2 -desktop X -httpd /opt/freeware/vnc/classes -auth /home/padmin/.Xauthority -geometry 1024×768 -depth 8 -rfbwait 120000 -rfbauth /home/padmin/.vnc/passwd -rfbport 5902 -nolisten local -fp /usr/lib/X11/fonts/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/ibm850/,/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/

In the above output we see the port to be 5902.

9. From the remote machine we can connect to that port by proving the ServerIP:port, Username and Password :

!0. After connection the screen will look something like this :
